Summary
- A collector recently obtained 1 BTC from a $13 pack of trading cards bought at GameStop.
- The card was part of Cardsmiths’ Currency Series, featuring cards that can be redeemed for real cryptocurrencies.
- This marks at least the third instance of finding a 1 BTC card in the past year.
While GameStop does not sell Bitcoin directly (though it does hold BTC), a recent customer won a full Bitcoin, now valued at nearly $115,000, from a card pack bought at their store.
Inside a pack of Cardsmith’s Currency trading cards, a collector from Arizona revealed a 1 BTC card, complete with a redemption code for claiming the Bitcoin. The current value of Bitcoin is just under $115,000.
“I didn’t think something like this would really happen,” said the anonymous collector in a statement to Cardsmiths.
Cardsmiths’ Currency series includes redemption cards for Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, and Dogecoin, with the highest redemptions being for 1 BTC or 1 ETH.
Collectors can acquire these currency-themed card packs for as little as $13.25 each (depending on the pack size), with odds of 1:192 for pulling a crypto redemption—leading to an astounding 865,000% gain based on today’s Bitcoin value.
The recent card pull is at least the third full Bitcoin redemption through Cardsmiths in the past year, with other fortunate collectors finding full Bitcoin cards in packs priced at $33 and $50.
While entitled to the full Bitcoin, the latest collector plans to keep only 0.5 BTC due to a commitment made on Reddit before acquiring the card.
“Let me introduce myself: I’m the enthusiastic collector who made a commitment a while back that some of you might remember,” the Reddit user known as decoparts wrote in the Currencytradingcards subreddit. “To summarize: I was recording my pulls from various S4 Currency cards, and I promised to donate half of the after-tax value to charity, based on whatever crypto I discovered.”
“I really learned a lesson on keeping my promises and not just talking the talk,” they added.
Although Cardsmiths’ Series 4 Currency cards are sold out online, its latest SPACE Series still includes unredeemed full Bitcoin cards, with packs available for as little as $13.75 through its online shop.
The chances of winning crypto remain slim, with only 1 in every 192 packs expected to yield a crypto redemption card—the same odds faced by the fortunate recent collector.
A representative from Cardsmiths did not reply promptly to Decrypt’s inquiry for comment.
