The crypto sector has captured attention lately due to regulatory disputes, speculation, and hacks, but beneath the surface, wallets—the gateway for many into the digital asset realm—are steadily evolving and redefining participation in the Web3 economy.
This week’s installment of The Clear Crypto Podcast, presented by StarkWare and Cointelegraph, explores the future of cryptocurrency wallets with Jess Houlgrave, CEO of Reown, the firm behind WalletConnect. The discussion delves into how wallets are transitioning from specialized crypto tools to mainstream “control centers” for digital existence.
Variety of Crypto Wallets
“I don’t believe there’s a single best wallet because the requirements of individuals or companies will vary greatly,” Houlgrave stated.
“Some users may prioritize speed and accessibility, while a company handling significant crypto trades will require a very different type of wallet.”
This range of needs has spurred swift advancements. Initial obstacles like seed phrases and perplexing gas fees are gradually diminishing.
“Currently, I’m optimistic as I believe the top-notch wallets have effectively addressed these issues,” she noted. “There’s now much more flexibility, enabling end users to select according to their preferences.”
Web3 Technology Meets Web2 Simplicity
Houlgrave highlighted the necessity of bridging the complexity of Web3 with the straightforwardness of Web2:
“What we focus on is how to close the gap between the user experiences of Web2 and Web3…”

She posits that interfacing with a wallet should be as seamless as launching an app, signing in in a familiar manner, and reaping all the crypto benefits without sacrificing user experience.
But what about crypto enthusiasts anxious about losing decentralization as wallets become more accessible? Houlgrave asserts that choice is paramount.
“Personally, I utilize different wallets for different purposes… What we seek is a compromise between the wallet experience, providing necessary options for security and self-custody, and the ability to enjoy some of the advantages of Web3 in alternative ways.”
Looking forward, wallets might evolve far beyond mere financial management. Houlgrave suggested they could become akin to a “full handbag.”
“It could store my identity, logins, data… my medical history, academic records, job references, tax payments, property deeds, receipts, and warranties for my appliances. All these items make perfect sense to retain in a wallet-like format.”
