Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase is teaming up with technology security firm Cloudflare to create the x402 Foundation, which will advocate for the integration of artificial intelligence in payment systems.
Summary
- The x402 Foundation, by Coinbase and Cloudflare, aims to make AI-driven payments as effortless as sending an email.
- The x402 protocol establishes a universal structure for real-time, stablecoin transactions, facilitating everything from micropayments for creators to pay-per-use AI services and commerce between agents.
- This protocol embeds payments into the web, allowing AI agents, businesses, and applications to conduct transactions autonomously, thereby creating a new landscape where blockchain intersects with intelligent, scalable commerce.
On Tuesday, Sept. 23, Coinbase and Cloudflare announced their collaboration, outlining the x402 Foundation’s goal of advancing AI-enabled payment systems through the x402 protocol.
The x402 serves as a framework that enables users and businesses to transfer value online using a shared language, as stated in a press release.
Dan Kim, Vice President of Business Development and Listings at Coinbase, commented that the x402 Foundation’s mission is to usher in a new era of payments. The protocol aims to set the standard for AI payments, facilitating the rapid expansion of the agentic commerce ecosystem.
The x402 protocol enables direct web-based payments, facilitating autonomous transfers among AI agents, businesses, and applications.
A new era for payments
The x402 is poised to transform payments through automation and scalability, supported by AI technologies. Potential applications include pay-per-use AI services, micropayments for creators, storage and media solutions, and payments between agents.
The foundation plans to enhance the protocol for these objectives, focusing on developer grants, resources, and interoperability initiatives.
“The x402 Foundation sets the foundation for a future where AI agents can make transactions independently, creating entirely new workflows and business models,” Kim stated.
Cloudflare added in a separate announcement that x402 allows users to monetize traditional applications.
The protocol also opens avenues for innovative monetization models, such as AI assistants that can shop from multiple retailers, an AI agent that might pay for each rendering session in a browser, or an autonomous stock trader utilizing micropayments. These are among the emerging trends benefiting from “programmatic access to resources.”
“Clients and servers that can comprehend the x402 protocol can transact without requiring accounts, subscriptions, or API keys,” the Cloudflare team mentioned.
