The opposition parties in Argentina have reignited a stalled investigation into President Javier Milei’s involvement in the LIBRA scandal, capitalizing on fresh corruption claims that have unsettled the government shortly before the elections in October.
The commission, originally established in April but hindered by bureaucratic and congressional obstacles, was reactivated on August 28 after leaked audio implicated Milei and his sister Karina in a different bribery operation.
The recordings, belonging to former presidential attorney and government official Diego Spagnuolo, included allegations of cash-for-favors transactions. Spagnuolo later confirmed the authenticity of the recordings.
Public outrage drives investigation
This scandal has sparked a surge of public outrage. On Wednesday, protesters threw lettuce and trash at Milei during a public event, an incident that made headlines nationwide.
No injuries were reported, but the episode underscores increasing unrest towards the president’s regime. The new controversy has revitalized the LIBRA investigation, which had lost momentum following Milei’s dissolution of its initial task force in May.
The LIBRA issue revolves around accusations of insider trading and a pump-and-dump scheme related to the digital token, a case that prosecutors suggest may have involved the highest echelons of power in Argentina.
Maximiliano Ferraro, a legislator from the Civic Coalition ARI and leader of the new investigative panel, stated that the commission aims to determine if any wrongdoing occurred. Ferraro noted that the investigation was revived due to ongoing questions about possible insider trading.
Political implications before elections
Five opposition parties, representing 136 of the 257 lawmakers in the Chamber of Deputies, voted to reopen the case despite resistance from Milei’s supporters.
The commission has established a reporting deadline of November 10, just weeks after the Argentine elections.
This investigation adds to the growing array of challenges confronting Milei as he manages a presidency already burdened by economic difficulties and rising public dissatisfaction. The combination of corruption scandals and renewed inquiries could significantly impact his political future.
While the LIBRA scandal has unsettled Argentina’s cryptocurrency sector, the broader allegations of bribery and power misuse have resonated more deeply with the public. With elections on the horizon, the resolution of the investigation and its political implications remain uncertain.
