Under the leadership of President Nayib Bukele, El Salvador—the pioneering country in recognizing bitcoin as legal tender—is now striving to lead in the realm of artificial intelligence. The nation has partnered with Elon Musk’s xAI to develop the world’s first AI-driven public education system.
Over the next two years, the government plans to implement xAI’s Grok chatbot in more than 5,000 public schools, providing support to over a million students and thousands of educators, as stated in a Thursday announcement.
Grok will serve as a digital tutor, tailoring lessons to fit each student’s pace and abilities, while aligning with El Salvador’s national curriculum. This initiative aims to ensure that both urban and rural students enjoy equal learning opportunities, according to xAI. Additionally, the project will generate new AI datasets, frameworks, and methodologies specifically designed for educational applications, prioritizing local needs, safety, and a human-centered approach, as highlighted in the announcement.
“Collaborating with El Salvador on this system will allow us to create innovative methodologies, datasets, and frameworks to responsibly integrate AI into classrooms worldwide,” the release elaborated.
President Nayib Bukele, whose administration has boosted the nation’s bitcoin reserves to 7,500 BTC, proclaimed that El Salvador is “leading the way in AI-enhanced education.” Musk remarked, “El Salvador isn’t simply anticipating the future of education; they are actively creating it with xAI.”
