Spacecoin has successfully completed its inaugural blockchain transaction via space, utilizing a CTC-0 satellite.
Summary
- Spacecoin executed its first end-to-end blockchain transaction using a nanosatellite
- The signal was transmitted from Chile to Portugal through space and validated on the blockchain
Blockchain has ventured beyond Earth. The satellite-enabled DePIN initiative, Spacecoin, achieved the historic milestone of the first blockchain transaction traversing space. Announced on Wednesday, Oct. 1, during the TOKEN2049 event in Singapore, the transaction was relayed via a nanosatellite over 7,000 kilometers from Chile to Portugal.
“This marks the first instance of a blockchain transaction genuinely leaving Earth and returning intact. It demonstrates that crypto can function beyond traditional internet boundaries, monopolies, and even the planet itself. Spacecoin’s goal is to extend decentralization into orbit, with this test being an initial step towards providing billions with a censorship-resistant, borderless internet,” stated Tae Oh, Founder of Spacecoin, to crypto.news.
The transaction was sent from Punta Arenas, Chile, using S-band radio, to the CTC-0 nanosatellite, which then relayed it to the Azores, Portugal, where it was validated on the Creditcoin test network. The satellite was supplied for this test by EnduroSat, a European nanosatellite company.
Spacecoin aims to harness Space for decentralization
This space-based transaction serves not only as a symbol but also as a proof of concept for facilitating crypto and financial transactions in areas lacking stable internet access. Additionally, it enhances blockchain’s resistance to censorship by circumventing internet service providers and land-based infrastructure, thus offering communication solutions in conflict-affected regions.
“In contrast to terrestrial networks that are susceptible to outages, censorship, and cost issues, a decentralized satellite network can offer global, censorship-resistant internet access independent of monopolies,” noted Spacecoin’s press release.
Spacecoin is set to launch three additional satellites in Q4 2025 to facilitate cross-satellite communication. The initiative plans to utilize these satellites to showcase its functionalities across various continents.
